Mad World isn't even close to "serious" and it's not bulletproof from start to finish...but even if you don't laugh at everything, you're bound to laugh at something. First is the general release version that runs 161 minutes with 5.1 DTS-MA. Unless you were lucky enough to see this 70mm film in its original theatrical release, then be very clear; you have not really and truly seen this film. Here’s a treat for all you It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World superfans. The roadshow version played in theaters that showed Cinerama but the film was shot on Ultra Panavision 70 that uses 60mm film stock. Faded or incorrect colors, audio dropouts, forced subtitles, audio accompanied by still images, and other anomalies can be spotted during this 192-minute experience, but the trade-off for "new faces and places" will be more than worth it for die-hard disciples. There are so many thing that you will learn from this commentary that it’s like watching the film for the first time. Call it "alternate", "reconstructed" or even "Roadshow", as it attempts to replicate the 210-minute version seen before the film was trimmed for its nationwide theatrical run. The time and which this film was made this cast had to bring it’s A+ game. Troy Miller is a director and producer whose credits include the hit television comedies Mr. Show, Arrested Development, The Office, Flight of the Conchords, and Parks and Recreation. The madcap main feature has held up quite nicely over the years...and though its target audience has dwindled a bit since then, it remains a popular favorite among those with a soft spot for chaotic, free-wheeling comedy. It started playing after the intermission and before the ‘Entr’acte’ the theater would play this audio that described what each group was doing from where they were left off in the picture before the intermission. Of course, not everything works. I will say the colors are a bit better on the Criterion version and the picture is a little bit sharper but the difference is not too big. The added "Roadshow" scenes don't always blend seamlessly from a quality standpoint, but there are no flagrant issues to report here that aren't related to the source material. Though technically presented as an extra, Criterion's package also includes a 192-minute Extended Cut on Disc 2. While clothing,cars and locations are of their time the story is not. While the roadshow version ran 192 minutes there are a few scenes that were excised from the preview version that have been restored to this new version.
